OUR IN-HOUSE THERAPIST
Lucinda Johnstone, LPC, NCC, Therapist and Skills Trainer
The Meehl Foundation is delighted to introduce Lucinda Johnstone as its new
therapist and skills trainer. Lucinda brings a wealth of knowledge both professionally
and personally to her work. She holds a Masters degree in Counseling from University
of Houston at Clear Lake (UHCL) and is a Licensed Professional Counselor Intern. She
worked for 16 years as a public school teacher before going back to school for
what she describes as her "true calling and purpose in life".
Several year before entering the program at UHCL, Lucinda was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. As she traveled her own personal road to recovery through medication and therapy, she learned her moods were driving her thoughts and behaviors. Because of her own personal experience with Bipolar Disorder (BD), Lucinda became interested in a specialized form of cognitive behavior therapy called Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Skills Training, which has four components: Core mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotional Regulation, and Distress Tolerance. The elements of this program help clients correct their own illogical thinking and behavior so that their suffering is transformed into coping. DBT and Skills Training has an unprecedented success rate in the treatment of mood and personality disorders as well as problems with alcohol and drug abuse problems. One in 4 Americans lives with mental illness. Lucinda realized that thousands of Americans could be helped to fulfill their own life potential and lead healthy productive lives.
Lucinda works with people of all ages dealing with anything from situational problems to serious mood and behavior problems. She has a special passion to help parents effectively manage the behavior of their children and teens who have BD. In turn, these young people and adults learn to work as partners in their own recovery and to successfully manage the stresses and responsibilities of life so that they may reach their full potential.
Lucinda has been conducting therapy, classes, workshops, and parenting support groups since October, 2006.
To learn more about upcoming classes please send us an email or contact The Meehl Foundation directly by calling us at (979) 798-7972 or (979) 248-0840.
