We do shamanism differently...

At The Meehl Foundation Spiritual Retreat Center, we embrace the universality and intercultural value of shamanism as an omnipresent global practice, while also advocating deep respect and honour for the distinct cultural traditions and ancestral lineages that shape its many expressions.

We honor shamanism as a living thread that weaves through every culture and across all time — one that transcends borders and weaves the tapestry of a shared spiritual heritage for humanity. We recognize its presence across continents, eras, and generations, and we approach this wisdom with profound respect for the diverse traditions, peoples, and lineages from which this sacred thread is spun.

Our philosophy is rooted in gentleness, inclusivity, and authenticity. We invite seekers to step softly into their own unfolding—to rediscover connection, meaning, and magic in ways that feel both personal and profound. Within this sacred space, healing is not forced but allowed; transformation arises naturally, guided by intention, presence, and respect. Here, the journey is accessible to all, yet as unique as the soul who walks it.

With gentleness and reverence, we invite you to step into your own sacred journey, where healing unfolds naturally and transformation becomes an act of grace.

Respectful

We work with a range of vetted practitioners and elders to sustainably source our medicines directly from the tribes that steward them, as well as to ensure the fidelity and spirit of our ceremonies.

Inclusive

Shamanism is for everyone, regardless of race, faith, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, or ancestry.

Barring legitimate health concerns, we welcome adults from all walks of life.

Immersive

From the moment you arrive, you are actively involved in your own healing. Each step of the way, we share the valuable principles and practies that put you in charge of your journey when you return home.

Accessible

Our approach is gentle and encouraging, allowing each person to engage with as much or as little healing as they feel ready for in the moment… putting you in control of your healing process.

Empowering

Because you’re with us – hands on – every step, our unique approach empowers you to make LASTING change, and gives you the techniques you need to maintain that change for a LIFETIME.

Ancient paths, modern hearts, timeless healing
Where technique becomes ceremony, and learning becomes remembrance...

Each practice we share is an invitation to remember— not just what you learn, but what your soul has always known. Many of the techniques we teach can only truly be grasped through personal experience. But, below you can find a small list of the most common/familiar practices that we incorporate.

Sacred plants, sacred purpose, sacred care
Every root a story. Every leaf a prayer.

The medicines we work with are living teachers—gifts of the Earth, offered in reciprocity and guided by sacred relationship.

The herbs we use in our curated meals, the ‘holy waters’ we use for cleansing, the smoke blends that we apply in ceremony… all of these are their own Plant Medicine. And we are careful in our sourcing and crafting of every one – many of which are cultivated or wildcrafted directly from the land we live on.

Wisdom carried, Not Claimed
We walk in the footsteps of those who remembered

Our elders are the bridge between worlds—the sacred carriers of ancestral memory and living wisdom. Through their teachings, songs, and prayers, the medicine of the old ways continues to flow, reminding us that every breath, every ceremony, and every act of reverence is part of an unbroken lineage.

We have been profoundly blessed to study and work alongside Wisdom Keepers from many lands, lineages, and traditions. Each has offered a unique gift—an insight, a song, a practice—that has become part of the living tapestry of our own path and teachings. Their guidance sustains our work and reminds us always to walk in humility, respect, and right relationship with the seen and unseen worlds.

With deep gratitude, we give direct recognition to:
Joe Turner (Ojibwe medicine man), Gwilda Wiyaka (Shaman), Bendis Quarry (Bandrui Priestess), Neal Henegar (Kambo practitioner), Sangeet Khalsa (Reiki Master), and Ted Silverhand (Tuscarora Sagarissa Seer).

We also extend heartfelt appreciation to the teachers and visionaries who have helped shape the global movement of shamanic remembrance: Robin Wall Kimmerer, Ross Heaven, Alberto Villoldo, Sandra Ingerman, Ted Andrews, Terence McKenna, and Michael Harner. Their contributions have opened pathways for countless souls to reconnect with the sacred and the natural world.

And above all to Unci Maka herself – because the Earth is always our greatest teacher.

Respect. Relationship. Responsibility.

At The Meehl Foundation, we strive to clearly distinguish between the global presence of animistic spirituality (today called “shamanism”) and the culturally specific practices preserved by First Nations peoples around the world.

Shamanism as a global reclamation is not a single tradition, nor does it belong to any one culture or people. It is a way of seeing and relating to the world—an ensouled understanding of spirit, nature, and healing that has arisen independently in many places throughout history.

Cultural rituals, however, do belong to the communities from which they arose—communities that have preserved their wisdom through generations of struggle, resilience, and reverence.

Our work begins with recognizing, honoring, and teaching this distinction — cultivating a mindful balance between rekindling our relationship with the natural world as a living, reciprocal partner, and fostering respectful engagement with Indigenous knowledge when it is generously shared.

Anytime we share lineaged wisdom, these teachings have been entrusted to us by someone recognized within their own lineage or community—someone who holds the authority to pass them on and who has given explicit blessing for us to do the same. This difference matters profoundly.

That said, such rituals represent a very small fraction of what we do. Our broader focus lies in the core principles of shamanic healing as they have appeared across the world—and in the ancient Indo-European traditions of our own ancestral lines, rooted in their own ancestral soil.

Whoever your ancestors were, they too practiced forms of shamanic and healing arts. Reconnecting with those lineages may take time and effort, but it is always worth it. These ancestral pathways offer a doorway into Shamanism that is non-appropriative, authentic, and profoundly personal—woven into your DNA, your lineage, and your own journey of healing.
